Today’s painting was inspired by the luck of the draw – literally. I have these artist’s creativity cards that I’ve never played with, so in the spirit of experimenting I pulled them out.
“Do a totally nonobjective painting using only geometric shapes. If you wish add numbers.”
I appreciate these types of paintings – but this is totally not me – as you know.
I can’t say that I am happy with this. It’s too complicated. Not enough big solid shapes – too many mid sized shapes. and the values are off – there isn’t enough contrast. But completing it is an exercise in composition – even if it is a failed attempt in my opinion.
I should have taken the time to do a couple of quick sketches – they would have been super quick since shapes are pretty easy to pull together with a couple of lines. Part of me is debating re-doing the challenge tomorrow, but I am curious about what tomorrow’s card might say.
I may cut this up and make it into something else – wouldn’t it be interesting to cut this up, change and rearrange it for 10 days? I wonder what I’d end up with by the last day. The bonus of having a failed painting is that you can do anything with it – nothing you do could make it any worse 😉
What do you think? Is it worth a try? Anyone want a piece of this for your own art making? If so email your address to me at lauratetrault at gmail dot com and I’ll send you a piece.

I find it rather ‘busy’, complex, without a singular strong feature. The colours are restful. But it does not lift my consciousness much.
I totally agree.
